5 TIPS TO TACKLE THE SUPERMARKET
#1 Avoid the clever marketing
When it comes to success with nutrition, the supermarket can either make you or break you! You have to be super careful when going into the supermarket as they are all set up for one thing: To make you spend money and buy whatever they aim to sell which 9 out of 10 times is crappy food, so be aware of this. I know for a fact if you look out the back of almost any supermarket, their store rooms will be 90% full of crap! Mainly full of confectionery, chips, sodas (biggest one), lollies etc as it sells the most. Even think of this: It normally has its own 2 isles plus floor stands and displays all over the supermarket, correct?
#2 Make a list and stick to it
Make sure to plan your meals and make a list from that. See what you need and what you already have at home and decide to stick to that list only, before you even go into the supermarket.
#3 Always eat before you go shopping
Make sure you eat before going into any supermarket! If you don’t and you go into a supermarket hungry, you will most likely buy quick and easy meals as you’re hungry and want to eat ASAP or even if you buy something to eat then and there. There’s a big chance it’s not going to be the healthiest choice.
#4 Shop around the out sides of the supermarket
Once in the supermarket you don’t want to be looking around much. Remember to stick to your list and to also stick around the outside of the supermarket. Why? When you go into a supermarket, you normally walk straight into the produce department. Then if you keep going around the outside of it, you will run into the deli and meats etc. The real food is normally kept on the outsides of the supermarket. Of course there will be some cases where you will have to go into the middle of the shop to get lentils, beans and herbs etc, but most of the time you will be shopping on the outsides.
#5 Buy quality over quantity
When buying fruit, veg, meats or really anything, buy quality produce. You want to get the best food you can afford. If it’s marked down, it’s 9 out of 10 times older and not as good quality as the newer, fresher stuff. There’s no point coming home with heaps of not so good food just to try and get more. There’s a saying I always say and believe: “Quality over quantity”. Of course with this being said, buy what you can afford.
Hope this helps!
